Intel P55 Chipsets don't have UHCI controllers!

The intent of this forum is to discuss my DOS TSR programs (available at http://bretjohnson.us), how they work and don't work, new/missing features, status of updates, and anything else related to them that may need to be discussed.

Intel P55 Chipsets don't have UHCI controllers!

Hi Brent,

Let me just say that I'm very impressed with your programming skills.
I'm blown away by your USB software and I'm really excited about trying
it out. So, I gave it a try on my newest Intel P55 motherboard.

Opps. I accidentally hit <ENTER> while typing this note.

Anyhow, to my surprise usbuhci.com couldn't find any UHCI host controllers.
This seemed strange to me so I did some checking with a PCI tool.
Sure enough, Intel has dropped UHCI support in their chipsets!
My newest Nehalem laptop doesn't have UHCI controller either.
Intel only supports EHCI PCI controllers. USB 1.1 is supported by
hubs.

I have the feeling that this is will be the way of the future.
I'm extremely bummed out. So, without EHCI support USBDOS
is obsolete. Rats.

I was afraid that would happen someday -- apparently someday is here already.

Until an EHCI driver is written (still a LONG ways off in the future, unless somebody volunteers to help), I can only think of one option. You can buy an external USB host controller to plug into the computer (PCI for the desktop and PCMCIA for the laptop). Just make sure the cards are UHCI compatible. You will also need to make sure that the BIOS can enable the hardware properly (assign IRQ's, memory, etc.). This should not be a problem with PCI, but can sometimes be an issue with PCMCIA (many times the BIOS expects to OS to do all of the work when it comes to PCMCIA setup). I should also point out that I've never tried the drivers with a PCMCIA controller, so can't give you any advice there.

I've seen a 10 years old laptop with OHCI only. And Georg's DOSUSB can't use it either. :-(

NO. Limited usability, though.

BTW, Georg's DOSUSB (2.0 beta) now does support EHCI ... but is buggy.
