Can I send you a problematic hardware?

The intent of this forum is to discuss my DOS TSR programs (available at http://bretjohnson.us), how they work and don't work, new/missing features, status of updates, and anything else related to them that may need to be discussed.

Can I send you a problematic hardware?

Postby Laaca » Sat Feb 27, 2010 8:51 pm

Hello!
Firstly I would like to say that I am happy that I can connect my newly bought Nokia phone with my DOS machine using your drivers and download the made photos. Great!

But I have still problems with one of my Kingston flash drives. It works on windows, with Georg's USB drivers but with your drivers not. The drive is recognised, INT21h functions and INT13h functions see it but no files are seen on drive.
I tried to play with partitioning using Ranish manager, tried also other things but without success.

So I would like to ask you. Can you write here your home post address?
I'll send you this flash drive in envelope to be you able to find out what is wrong.

We may end up doing something like that in the end, but for now let's just post the output of the standard troubleshooting options with the disk plugged in:

DRIVES
USBDRIVE /S
USBDRIVE /D
USBDRIVE /I
USBDRIVE /C
USBDRIVE /B
USBDRIVE /F
USBDRIVE /Q:1

Also, which version of DOS are you using?

OK. I ran the test procedures you suggested and the result uploaded here: http://laaca.borec.cz/kingston.zip
I hope it helps. :-)

All of the "USBC" stuff in the /F option output indicates that the device isn't accepting the USB requests like it should. Have you tried changing the /X option to a lower value?

Try this older version of USBDRIVE. It actually worked better with at least one other user than the latest version does (see the link below). If this doesn't help, you can try sending it to me, but I can't guarantee when I will get a chance to work with it -- it could take several months.

You can send it here:

Again, just keep in mind that I may keep it for a LONG time before you end up getting it back.

I got your disk Friday in the mail, and looked at it a little bit yesterday. It turns out that one of the disks I have is the same kind (Kingston DataTraveler 4GB), but I think mine is newer than yours based on the little numbers imprinted on the side and some slight differences in packaging. Anyway, mine works fine (though I do have to set /X:1) while yours does not. When you first put yours in you can successfully do a DIR, but after that the disk sort of acts like it's read-only with a corrupted MBR. I also tried re-partitioning the disk, which failed miserably (part of the reason I say it it looks like it's read-only).

As stated above, it will be awhile (probably several months) before I can look at this in detail and do anything with USBDRIVE to try and fix it.
