USB stick not 'bad' but no drive letter assigned

The intent of this forum is to discuss my DOS TSR programs (available at http://bretjohnson.us), how they work and don't work, new/missing features, status of updates, and anything else related to them that may need to be discussed.

USB stick not 'bad' but no drive letter assigned

Postby davepaxton » Wed Sep 11, 2013 9:19 pm

Hello there
New 'Verbatim' 8Gb device, partitioned single partion 1.8 Gb formatted FAT32 seems to enumerate ok but when access is attempted gives "Not ready reading ....."
DOS in use is IBM PC DOS 2000 (aka v7.1) but have used the USBDRIVE /T:Y anyway.

Listing from USBDRIVES /S,D.I.C,B,F enclosed.

Note that after /I is executed system seems to hang or at least lockup for many minutes.
Removing the device at this point unlocks sytem and returns it to DOS prompt

Anyone spot the problem?

Regards
Dave Paxton

It looks like the problem is here:

OS Version: 7.00
Mount FAT32 Volumes: No

The OS is reporting itself as version 7.0, not 7.1, so USBDRIVE won't mount FAT32 volumes by default. For some reason, it doesn't recognize that you issued the /T:Y option.

Also, after a disk has been recognized by USBDRIVe, it's too late to issue the /T:Y option for that particular disk. You'll either need to use the /T:Y option when you first install USBDRIVE, or unlplug and replug the device, or reset the device with the software.

Bret,
Thanks for feedback.
I had not spotted the DOS V7.0 thing,I thought that IBM PC DOS 200 classed itself as V7.1 (it certainly can handle FAT32) but as you say in your
notes it depends on what it declares itself to be when read by USBDRIVE. Thanks I missed that.

Don't understand why USBDRIVE ignores the /T:Y parm with this device but I think the problem lies with the device because if I reformat it as
FAT16 it still does not operate. I still get "not ready reading ....."

Do I just put this one down as a dodgy stick?
Kind Regards

Probably best, at least for now. Newer versions of the programs might fix it, when they finally come out. I'm working on them as spare time permits, and of course there's very little of that.

With the work I've managed to do so far with USBDRIVE, it does seem to recognize some disks better than it used to, and it's also more reliable when it comes to speed. Still not ready for a final release, though.

Thank you for your efforts. IIRC we had had a long discussion about some BUG's 4 years ago ... 2009-Sep ... and the fixes are not in the 2010-Jan version. What about an intermediate version having just the small and simple fixes (no EHCI, no 1000 x speeeeedup, ...) ?

Unfortunately, that's not really an option. I'm making major changes to all of the programs, and won't release anything until I think it's very close to where it needs to be. I think you'll like the results a lot, but still need to wait a while longer.
